WHEN I told the kids a Ford was the next car in our roadtest rotation, our six-year-old exclaimed: “Is it the Fiesta Econetic Dad? Did you know it’s the most economical car there is!’’

It seems everyone knows the virtues of this super frugal diesel hatch, heavily promoted as the Prius-buster in an extensive advertising campaign that clearly caters to all ages.

The Fiesta Econetic is a clever, cute-as-a-button hatch that has an on-special driveaway price tag of $24,990.

This makes it the most expensive Fiesta, but it's a bargain compared to its environmentally-friendly rivals such as the Toyota Prius, which costs some $15,000 more.

At the heart of the Econetic is the latest-generation common rail 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine.

This achieves mind-blowing and wallet-boosting economy of 3.7 litres per 100km.

On the open road it literally runs on the smell of an oily rag, with consumption dropping to 3.3 litres/100km. Take that hybrids!

The hatch is surprisingly zippy, having more than enough pep for most drivers.

It is a commuter's dream, eating up the miles with consummate ease. Another surprise is how quiet it runs even at the highway limit.

A strange upward-pointing arrow appears on the dash from time to time, causing some concern until you check the information manual. This informs you the arrow is there to advise the pilot to change gears for even better economy. This was a relief, because I thought there might have been an ejector seat.

The Fiesta’s ride height has been lowered slightly, which gives the hatch a more sporty feel. It corners like a dream, but you do cop a jolt if you hit a decent pothole.

The engine is matched to a 5-speed manual transmission and there is no automatic at this stage, which will no doubt deter some potential buyers

Equipment levels are impressive and standard features include air-conditioning, electric front windows, anti-skid brakes, stability and traction control, and dual front, side, curtain and driver’s knee airbags. This ensured the Fiesta gained a 5-star ANCAP safety rating.

Like its Fiesta siblings, the Econetic is a stylish-looking small car.

Inside, it's not exactly basketballer friendly up front, but there's ample room for two moderately sized adults and children under 12 won't complain about the rear seat space.

The Ford is well laid out and all controls fall easily to hand.

All attributes considered, there is much to like about the new Fiesta Econetic.

It's the best thing since digital TV _ just ask the kids!
